What 3D software packages are there?

There are two major software packages used in the 3D industry, called 3ds max and Maya, and although developed separately, both are currently owned by a company called Autodesk.

3ds Max 9 Interface Maya 8 Interface

Above are screenshots of both pieces of software. On the left is 3ds max, and on the right is Maya. In both we have four main windows, called viewports, which allow the illusion of 3d space on a flat screen. Across the bottom are the animation timeline tools, and on the right in both packages is a set of contextual panels. There are major and minor differences, but rest assured that if you learn one piece of software, the other will seem familiar once you look at it. It's also important to note that the interface in both programs is highly customizable - it's possible for each to emulate the other!

As you can see, the two major software packages are quite similar. That's because the tools an animator needs don't change, even when the software does. Both packages are excellent at their jobs and the choice of software is really up to the individual animator or company.

In fact, some companies will use proprietary software and expect to train any new employees as a matter of course. Other companies are satisfied if you can use any software package, and are happy to train you in another. This is because it is the theories and animation skills that are important, not necessarily which buttons you press to get the job done.

Each piece of software offers short, basic tutorial movies to new users. Maya:

And 3ds Max:

Intro screen, 3ds max

One of the major ways the two pieces of software differ is in their handling of the look of an object - its material, shading, or texture. Maya's shaders are much more complicated than 3ds max's. You can create equally sophisticated looks from both software packages, but they’re done in a very different manner.

Another difference is that 3ds max has a built-in character/skeleton creation module called Biped, which allows for quick, simple access to a humanoid skeleton, immediately ready for animation. Building a character’s skeleton from the ground up is possible in both programs, but Biped is great as a base when you’re on a deadline.

As we’ve seen, 3ds max somewhat simpler than Maya – but with a lot of customization options suitable for the experienced user – and is therefore easier for the beginner to grasp. So, the basic 3D Animation program at DArTT is delivered in 3ds max. Our advanced programs are delivered in 3ds max, but many of our resources are non-software specific, and the same skills could be applied in Maya.
